All Roads Lead to Folk Songs
From 2017 until the end of 2024, I worked on compiling the academic publication Latvian Folk Songs (Latviešu tautasdziesmas). The first chapter I created was dedicated to feasting and beer songs, while the last one focused on taverns and the ruin caused by drinking. This experience inspired the topic of my doctoral thesis – The Problem of Alcoholism in Latvian Folk Songs: Perceptions and Interpretations. In the thesis, I aim to combine textual analysis with a broader cultural-historical and social context, revealing how alcohol consumption was evaluated and interpreted in traditional society, and how we view it today.
I am particularly interested in how excessive drinking in folklore texts is connected to socio-economic conditions, gender roles, and moral norms, as well as why these texts have often been excluded from the national identity narrative.
In short – all roads lead to folk songs.
