Ivars Šteinbergs participates in a scientific congress in Lisbon

On 19 November of this year ILFA researcher Ivars Šteinbergs is participating in the international scientific congress “Modernidades Vigiadas, Modernidades Clandestinas” (“Surveilled Modernities, Clandestine Modernities”) in Lisbon, Portugal, with a paper titled “Modernism(s) in Soviet Latvia: The Translations of Leons Briedis”.

The paper explores the sporadic life of modernist poetry within the complex Soviet literary ecosystem during the period of Latvia’s occupation, with particular attention to the poet Leons Briedis (1949–2020) and his translations in the 1970s and 1980s. Briedis was one of the most prolific translators of Portuguese poetry, including works by Fernando Pessoa, Portugal’s most renowned modernist.

The congress is organized in cooperation with the University of Lisbon; more information can be found on the university’s website.
