Elīza Paula Graudiņa’s article on the adaptation of Siberian Haiku at the Latvian Puppet Theatre

An article by Elīza Paula Graudiņa, Research Assistant at the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia (ILFA), entitled “From Graphic Novel to Performance: The Adaptation of Siberian Haiku at the Latvian Puppet Theatre”, has been published in Scriptus Manet: Journal of Humanities and Arts.

The study examines the journey of Jurga Vilė and Lina Itagaki’s graphic novel Siberian Haiku to the stage of the Latvian Puppet Theatre – from the literary work and its translation into Latvian to Valters Sīlis’s stage adaptation and the production premiered in 2024.

In the article, the author explores how the visual and narrative structures of the graphic novel are transformed as the work moves from one medium to another, and how a dialogue emerges between the book and the theatrical performance. Particular attention is paid to the role of paper puppet theatre and real-time visual techniques, as well as to the ways in which the production addresses the experience of deportation, memory, and the poetics of haiku.
