Zine "Mākonis 2.0" published

On December 2, 2024, the Archives of Latvian Folklore (LFK) celebrated its 100th anniversary. Over the past century, LFK has collected, preserved, and studied a vast array of intangible cultural heritage materials. The archive’s very first year was marked in the pages of the newspaper Valdības Vēstnesis—and now, the beginning of its second century is ushered in with the release of a zine, a non-periodical, one-time publication in newspaper format, titled Mākonis 2.0.
Mākonis 2.0 bridges past and present—it reflects on LFK’s history while offering a creative commentary on contemporary times. The publication preserves the classic newspaper column layout, featuring sections like Atmiņu klade (Memory Notebook), Četrrinde (Quatrain), Lauka pētījumus (Field Research), and more. In addition, the zine includes varied content and surprise elements, creating a rich and playful reading experience.
On one level, Mākonis 2.0 functions as a traditional newspaper, with topical content and visual cues. On another, it is the outcome of a festive and collaborative process, with contributions made by participants of the LFK centenary celebration. The zine thus captures both a moment in time and a spirit of shared creativity—one that continues beyond the centenary itself.
This publication also serves as a gesture of gratitude to all those who have contributed to the work and growth of the Archives. Special thanks go to Ivars Šteinbergs for his poem dedicated to LFK, read aloud on December 2 by Kārlis Vērdiņš, and to all who have stood close to the archive’s mission throughout the years.
Finally, heartfelt thanks to the Archives of Latvian Folklore itself, for its vital role in preserving Latvian culture and history.
We warmly invite you to dive into the pages of Mākonis 2.0 and enjoy its diverse, thought-provoking content!
