The 8th episode of the podcast "Digital Humanities", titled "Language Technologies and DH", has been released

The 8th episode of the podcast "Digital Humanities", titled "Language Technologies and DH", features Haralds Matulis in conversation with Dr. sc. comp. Inguna Skadiņa, leading researcher and professor at the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Latvia.

This episode explores the history of language technologies in Latvia, including the story behind the first digital resource in Latvian. Listeners will hear about the founding of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (AiLab) at the University of Latvia, and how research institutions differ from industry environments. The discussion also touches on how students from the humanities can enter the field of language technologies, whether programming skills are necessary for the field, and how tools like ChatGPT may be changing how people learn and approach programming.

Other topics include the development of large language models for Latvian, useful university courses under the Language Technology Initiative (VTI), and an overview of language resources available through the CLARIN research infrastructure repository.

The podcast "Digital Humanities" offers conversations with experts in the field, highlighting current digital humanities research in Latvia. It is jointly produced by the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art, University of Latvia and the National Library of Latvia.
