Symposium “Once Again About Witches: Otherness from the Perspective of Feminine Archetype Analysis”

Department of the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art (University of Latvia) and the Latvian Centre for Performance Art are organizing an international symposium titled “Once Again About Witches: Otherness from the Perspective of Feminine Archetype Analysis.”

This interdisciplinary project brings together art historians, representatives of performative arts, and folklore researchers to discuss the conflicted archetypes of witches and the issues surrounding their representation. In a broader context, the symposium resonates with cultural stereotypes and fears of female agency, as well as the desire to control and subdue it.

Among the speakers from the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art are:

  • Toms Ķencis“Witches in Culture and Cultures of Witching”

  • Sandis Laime“A Typical Witch? Some Notes on the Most Popular Stereotypes”

The project is financially supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers (Nordic Culture Point) and ZUZEUM.
The symposium takes place on May 23 at ZUZEUM, accompanied by two creative workshops and discussions.

The event is part of the Riga Performance Art Festival STARPTELPA as a satellite program, thematically resonating with this year’s festival theme – “Tomorrow’s Rebels.”
