Seminar “Data visualization for humanities researchers”

On April 8 at 3 PM, the fifth seminar in a series organized by digitalhumanities.lv in cooperation with CLARIN-LV and DARIAH-EU will take place in Riga at 4 Oskara Kalpaka Boulevard and online. The seminar series focuses on digital humanities and historical research.

In the seminar “Data Visualization for Humanities Researchers”, researcher Anda Baklāne will discuss how visualization skills have become one of the most important literacies in contemporary research. Their applications are very broad, ranging from technical exploratory charts to illustrated infograms and data art. The seminar will also examine the influence of data analysis traditions on digital humanities, as well as their points of intersection and differences.

Various types of charts will be reviewed, including bar and line charts, bubble and scatter plots, heat maps, geographic maps, networks, and other forms of visualization, with examples of how they have been used in research in history, literature, and the social sciences. Issues related to data preparation and tools used for creating visualizations will also be discussed.

Anda Baklāne is the Head of Digital Research Services and a researcher at the National Library of Latvia, as well as a lecturer at the University of Latvia, where she has taught courses such as “Digital Humanities and Social Sciences,” “Computer-Based Text Analysis and Visualization,” and “Latvian Literary Criticism.” In recent years, her research has focused on digital humanities, Latvian poetry of the 20th and 21st centuries, Latvian novels of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the theory of data visualization.

Participants are kindly asked to register whether they plan to attend in person at 4 Oskara Kalpaka Boulevard or online:
