Sandis Laime to participate in a conference on communities

On 29–30 October, the National History Museum of Latvia, located in Riga Castle, will host the international conference “People and Communities I: Archaeology and Prehistory,” organised by the museum in collaboration with the University of Latvia’s Interdisciplinary Research Incubator “Origins of Latvia.”

On 30 October, Sandis Laime, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia (ILFA), will participate in the conference’s final session, “Communities: Intangible Culture,” with a paper entitled “What Can Folklore Text Mapping Reveal about the Chronology of Tradition? The Case of the Latvian Witch Legend Corpus.”

The conference will bring together 25 researchers from eight European countries, combining insights from archaeology, history, linguistics, genetics and other disciplines to explore the formation, development and transformation of human communities from prehistory to the present day, with a particular focus on the history of Latvia and the Baltic Sea region.

The conference will launch an international conference series that, from 2026 to 2029, will explore the history of communities across different historical periods.

Venue: National History Museum of Latvia, Riga Castle, Pils laukums 3, Riga.

Those wishing to attend are invited to register by 26 October by emailing info@lnvm.gov.lv.

The conference working language is English.
