Publication by Artis Ostups on realism in poetry in "Neohelicon"
An article by Artis Ostups, researcher at the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia (ILFA), entitled “Trauma between realism and modernism in Eižens Vēveris’ poems about Mauthausen,” has been published in Neohelicon, an international Q1 journal of comparative literature.
The article examines the poetry of Latvian poet and Mauthausen concentration camp survivor Eižens Vēveris, focusing on how realist and modernist modes of expression intersect in his representation of the traumatic experience of the concentration camp. The study also analyses how the ideological conditions of Soviet Latvia in the late 1960s shaped the poetics of Vēveris’ work.
The research was conducted as part of the project “Recovering Latvian Realism: Literary Innovation as a Search for Identity” (lzp-2024/1-0341), funded by the Latvian Council of Science.
