Primitive & Noisy – Announcement (November 2024)

 

The team of the FLPP project “Primitive and Noisy Music in Soviet Latvia (1956–1986): Control Mechanisms and Practices of Avoidance under Authoritarian Rule” (No. lzp-2024/1-0059), based at the UL Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art, is looking for a research assistant.

Job Description:

  1. Contribute to project implementation, research activities, and public outreach.

  2. Conduct an independent academic study (course paper, bachelor's, master’s, or doctoral thesis) related to the themes of popular and rock music under Soviet authoritarianism—such as production, distribution, performance, censorship, etc.

Requirements:

– Enrolment in a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral program in the humanities or social sciences.
– Interest in the history of popular music, rock music, and subcultures in the Soviet period.
– Proficiency in English and Russian (required for working with sources, respondents, and international scholarly communication).
– Ability and willingness to work independently and as part of a team.

Specific Tasks:

– Archival research
– Conducting interviews
– Processing and systematizing research data
– Communicating project results on social media
