Musicology students visit the Archives of Latvian Folklore

The Archives of Latvian Folklore (ALF) were pleased to welcome musicology students from the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music on March 4. As part of an archival practice led by Kristiāna Vaickovska, the students became acquainted with the ALF music sources and activities, as well as with the possibilities for using the archive and cooperating with it.

Ethnomusicologist Ieva Vīvere introduced the students to the development of the ALF music collection, encouraging a reflective perspective on the creation of sources in the field of ethnomusicology and on the reasons that have either fostered or, conversely, limited their development.

This presentation of the ALF music collection forms part of a broader reflection on the formation of knowledge in folklore studies and ethnomusicology and on the people who shape it. The reflection is taking place within the State Research Programme “Letonika for the Development of a Latvian and European Society” in the project “NAMS. Latvian Identity and Knowledge Strategies as Resources for Societal Resilience” (No. VPP-IZM-LETONIKA-2025/1-0008).
