Launching the seminar series "Latvian Folkloristics in Exile"

The Research Group of the Archives of Latvian Folklore at the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia, in cooperation with the Museum “Latvians Abroad”, is launching a seminar series titled “Latvian Folkloristics in Exile." We invite you to the first seminar “Scholarly Studies in Latvian Folklore” which will take place on October 16 at 18:00 at the museum premises (Dzirnavu iela 84, Riga).
“Scholarly Studies in Latvian Folklore” was the title of a cycle of humorous essays by Latvian-American publicist and civic activist Laimonis Streips (1931–2003), published in the journal Jaunā Gaita from 1957 to 1967. In these “studies,” Streips offered thematic interpretations of Latvian folk songs, reflecting on various aspects of “ancient Latvian” life. Through parody and other comedic techniques, the author satirically addressed issues within the Latvian exile community—from exaggerated nationalism to integration into American culture—while also casting a critical eye beyond the Iron Curtain, toward developments in Soviet-occupied Latvia.
The evening will begin with a lecture by Dr. philol. Rita Zara, followed by informal discussion.
The seminar is free of charge and open to all; no prior registration is required.
You are warmly welcome to attend!
The seminar series is organized within the framework of the project “Latvian Folkloristics in Exile” (Project No. lzp-2024/1-0522), funded by the Latvian Council of Science.
