Jānis Daugavietis gives a lecture at the international IPMA Art Festival in Kaunas

As part of the International Photography and Media Art Festival IPMA, a public educational programme was held at the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art in Kaunas, Lithuania, featuring a lecture by Jānis Daugavietis, a researcher at the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia, on the photographic documentation of the underground music scene.

In his lecture, “A Professional Art Photographer Documents the Contemporary Underground Music Scene: The Case of Arnis Balčus,” Daugavietis examined photographer Arnis Balčus’s involvement in Riga’s emerging underground scene, which extended beyond merely documenting it through photography.

As part of the IPMA festival exhibition programme, Arnis Balčus’s photography exhibition The Scene is still on view at the Kaunas Picture Gallery.
