Invitation to events celebrating the 140th anniversary of Anšlavs Eglītis

To mark the 140th anniversary of the birth of writer Anšlavs Eglītis, the National Museum of Literature and Music of Latvia, in cooperation with the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia (ILFA), invites everyone to two events dedicated to the writer.

17 October at 12:00 – Chess Tournament. Visitors will also have the opportunity to recreate some of the chess games once played by Anšlavs Eglītis. Chess had been one of the writer's passions since his early youth and remained an important part of his life both during his years as a refugee in Germany and later in the United States. Read more here.

21 October at 18:00 – Film Evening. Amateur films made by Veronika Janelsiņa and held in the collection of the National Museum of Literature and Music of Latvia will be screened, offering a glimpse into Anšlavs Eglītis's everyday life and his home in Pacific Palisades, where he lived from 1952 onwards. Read more here.

Anšlavs Eglītis (1906–1993) was one of the most prolific and versatile Latvian émigré writers, whose literary career began in Latvia. He worked across a wide range of genres, including poetry, short fiction, novels, and drama. He was also an art critic in Latvia and a film critic in exile, with his reviews becoming an important part of cinema history. Anšlavs Eglītis is also one of the 98 cultural figures whose creative legacy is featured in the National Museum of Literature and Music's exhibition “Procrastination and Creation.”

The events are organised in cooperation with the University of Latvia's Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art as part of the National Research Programme “Latvian Literature as Belonging: Personalities, Poetics, and the Public Sphere” (LITBEL, No. VPP-IZM-Letonika-2025/1-0006).
