International seminar on the press during the "perestroika"

Senior researcher Eva Eglāja-Kristsone and researcher Jānis Oga from the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia will participate in the international seminar “A Window of Opportunities: Newspaper Press during Perestroika – Analyses and Field Reports”, which will take place in Helsinki, Finland, on 26–27 February.

At the seminar, Eva Eglāja-Kristsone and Jānis Oga will deliver a presentation titled “Awakening Through Leisure: Reimagining Freedom in Latvian Print Media”, analysing the development of the Latvian press during the perestroika period. Their participation in the seminar is one of the activities of the project “Latvian Literature as Belonging: Personalities, Poetics and the Public Sphere (LITBEL)” (No. VPP-IZM-Letonika-2025/1-0006).

The plenary lecture “Disrupting the Centralised Imperial Canon: Regionalist Photography Groups, Subversive Visuality, and the Birth of the Democratic Press of Perestroika”, will be delivered by Victoria Musvik, a doctoral candidate at the University of Oxford.
