In media: How Folklore Connects to Modern Life
The Latvian Radio program "Starpbrīdis" focuses on two projects implemented by the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia. One of them — the project "Spoken Songs: Algorithms of Composition and Improvisation" — explores spoken songs as the oldest layer of Latvian traditional vocal music, using artificial intelligence methods in the analysis. The second project — "NAMS. Latvian Identity and Knowledge Strategies as a Resource for Social Resilience" — examines how Latvian identity can contribute to societal resilience in conditions of geopolitical uncertainty.
At a time when the war in Ukraine continues and these threats are being felt ever more directly in our own homes, how can folklore help us understand ourselves and gain strength? And what is it that we still have not fully understood about our songs and identity? The discussion features leading researchers Ieva Vīvere and Rita Zara from the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia.
