Folklorists at Researchers’ Night

On September 27, during the European Researchers’ Night, researchers from the Archives of Latvian Folklore will be present at the University of Latvia Academic Centre, House of Science (Jelgavas iela 3). Folklorists invite visitors to join their activities on the 2nd floor.

In the Folklore Collection Workshop, visitors will have the chance — on strictly scientific grounds — to contribute to the 100-year-old Archives of Latvian Folklore. This time the focus will be on nursery songs (rhythmic texts for children, sung or recited by an adult, usually accompanied by movement, e.g., “Jājam, jājam mēs uz tirgu”, “Vāru, vāru putriņu”) and names for fingers (“Tas pirkstiņš vectētiņš…”). If you remember any from your childhood, stop by and share them! These materials are needed for an upcoming book. The collected entries will be added to the ongoing LFK collection [2177].

The Folk Song Laboratory invites visitors to take part in a fun game to discover their song skills. Who are you: the Nightingale – Knower of Many Songs, the Wise Little Crow, the Starling – Whistler Along, or the Corncrake – Singer of a Single Song? Marking the 130th anniversary of the start of the Latvju dainas publication, visitors will also be able to compete in assembling a virtual folk song puzzle, try reading slips from the Dainu skapis, uncover the orthography rules of the late 19th century, and learn about Krišjānis Barons’ achievements and notes on the slips.

The activities will take place from 17:00 to 21:00.
