Discussion on sustainable publishing on radio

A discussion on the challenges of implementing sustainability guidelines in the publishing industry took place on 7 November, during the Riga Book Festival, on Radio Naba’s programme “Nezāle”.

The programme’s host, Sanita Rībena, welcomed Dace Krecere-Vula, Head of the Publishing House of the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia; Juris Sīlis, Director of Sustainability Development at Jelgava Printing House; and Kitija Balcare, researcher at the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia. The discussion explored how sustainability is approached from the perspectives of publishers, printing houses, and authors.

The recently published book Ekoteātris un tā sazarotība (Ecotheatre and Its Branches), issued by the Publishing House of the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia, served as a pilot project for the conscious application of sustainability principles to book production and the decisions involved in the publishing process. The book was printed at Jelgava Printing House using environmentally responsible practices, as certified by the Nordic Swan Ecolabel for printed products.

This publication also marks a new direction for the Studia humanitarica series, in which the publishing house presents the latest research in the humanities based on recently defended doctoral dissertations.
