Dāvis Eņģelis presents Latvian spoken songs at the WoRMS workshop in Vienna
LU LFMI Research Assistant Dāvis Eņģelis participated in the 7th International Workshop on Reading Music Systems (WoRMS), held this year in Vienna as part of the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR).
WoRMS is one of the key events in the field of research focusing on the digital reading and encoding of music notation – developing algorithms capable of recognising and interpreting written music. At the workshop, Dāvis Eņģelis presented the paper “Interpreting and Encoding the Melodic Variability: The Case of Latvian Traditional Recitatives”, addressing questions related to the interpretation and digital encoding of Latvian traditional music materials.
“This was the first time we presented this research and the songs examined within it at the annual WoRMS workshop, introducing the international research community to Latvian traditional music materials and the possibilities for encoding,” says Dāvis Eņģelis.
The paper was prepared in collaboration with LU LFMI Senior Researcher Ieva Vīvere as part of the Latvian Council of Science project “Spoken Songs: Algorithms of Composition and Improvisation” (project No. lzp-2025/1-0252).
