Participation in Researchers’ Night 2024

Researchers from the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art, in cooperation with the Oral History Archive of the University of Latvia Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, invite everyone to take part in the public engagement activity “What Do You Know About the Roma of Latvia?” during Researchers’ Night 2024.

Roma in Latvia face poverty, social exclusion, and a high risk of discrimination — often due to a lack of public knowledge about them. The aim of the activity is to listen to and understand what people really know about Roma in Latvia, while also providing the wider public with an opportunity to learn about Roma history, culture, and traditions. In doing so, it seeks to foster understanding and empathy, as well as encourage interest in one’s fellow citizens.

On September 27, from 17:00 to 21:00 at Kalpaka bulvāris 4, visitors will be able to enjoy Roma music and explore historical and unique photographic and audio materials. They will also have the chance to share their own stories about events or encounters with Roma in Latvia with the researchers.

The Researchers’ Night activities are organized within the State Research Programme project “Landscapes of Identities: History, Culture and Environment” (No. VPP-LETONIKA-2021/1-0008).
