Dace Bula is participating in a symposium on the ocean in Bremen

Dace Bula, a lead researcher at the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia, from 18 to 20 June will participate in the symposium “Ocean Literacy – Literatures of the Oceans”, organized by the Blue Humanities research group at the University of Bremen.

The aim of the symposium is to bring together researchers whose focus is on human relationships with water, to establish an international network, and to outline a potential joint project. Symposium participants are invited to present their work and future plans in this field.

Dace Bula will discuss a plan to conduct a comparative study of two eco-elegies dedicated to a single extinct species, the Steller’s sea cow, a native of the northern Pacific Ocean. These are: Regina Ezer’s story “Song of the Last Sea Cow” and Finnish author Ida Turpeinen’s novel “Farewell, Mythical Ones!”, which has recently been published in Latvian.

The event will also feature a hands-on experience exploring the relationship between humans and water aboard a small boat in the waters off Bremenhaven.

The symposium is financially supported by the University of Bremen.
