Conference on Traditional Archives

From October 29 to 31, Riga will host the international scholarly conference “Archives of Traditional Culture: 100 + 10”. The event is part of the centenary celebrations of the Archives of Latvian Folklore, bringing together researchers from various fields of the humanities and social sciences to discuss the past and future perspectives of tradition archives — reflecting on the past 100 years and looking ahead to the next decade.
The conference is organized by the Archives of Latvian Folklore, UL ILFA, in cooperation with the Archives Working Group (https://www.siefhome.org/wg/arch/) and the Cultural Heritage and Property Working Group (https://www.siefhome.org/wg/chp/) of the International Society for Ethnology and Folklore (Société Internationale d’Ethnologie et de Folklore, SIEF), and the Riga City Council.
A total of 34 papers will be presented by scholars from 17 countries. The plenary lectures will be delivered by Maryna Chernyavska (Canada) and UL ILFA researcher Sanita Reinsone. On the opening day, participants will gather in the Riga City Council Meeting Hall; the following days will take place at the Conference Centre of the National Library of Latvia.
The cultural program of the academic forum will include the opening of an exhibition on the history of the folklore movement in the Friends Room of the National Library of Latvia (curators: Toms Ķencis, Aigars Lielbārdis), as well as a concert by Skandinieki at the “Ritums” Cultural and Folk Art Centre.
The working language of the conference is English. All sessions will also be streamed online:
