Conference on local feminisms in the Baltic region

On October 24–25, 2025, the international conference “Local Feminisms in the Baltic Region (Late 19th–Early 20th Century): Parallels, Differences and Influences” will take place in Vilnius at the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore.

Two leading researchers from the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia — Eva Eglāja-Kristsone and Zita Kārkla — will also participate with presentations.

Eva Eglāja-Kristsone will give a keynote lecture titled “The Personal as Historical: Women’s Writing and (Auto)biography”, while Zita Kārkla will present her paper “Realism and Feminist Perspectives in Latvian Women’s Writing at the Turn of the Century.”

The conference is dedicated to exploring local forms of feminism in the Baltic region, focusing on the contexts of women’s writing, history, and culture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It brings together historical, cultural, and literary perspectives, emphasizing women's experiences and contributions to the development of regional culture.

Participation in the conference and the thematic presentations are part of the research projects “Recovering Latvian Realism: Literary Innovation as a Search for Identity” (lzp-2024/1-0341) and “A Walk Through Time: Flânerie and Modernity in Interwar Latvian Culture” (lzp-2022/1-0505).
