Collective monograph “Latvian Literature 2016–2024” published
The Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art (ILFA) of University of Latvia has published the collective monograph Latvian Literature 2016–2024, edited by poet and literary scholar Artis Ostups. The volume brings together perspectives from researchers and practitioners on the latest developments in Latvian literature.
“Contemporary Latvian literature is a dynamic field: trends and emphases are shifting, while new authors and new questions continue to emerge. Poetry and prose respond to local and global events, explore unconventional forms of expression, and inspire other art forms. Literature as a whole seeks historical depth and demonstrates a concern for the world. The chapters of this book offer readers a map for navigating contemporary literature before it transforms once again along with reality,” says Artis Ostups, describing the monograph.
The monograph’s 11 chapters offer both historical perspectives and analytical reflections, seeking to cover as broad a range of literary material as possible. The chapters devoted to prose examine historical and biographical novels (Zanda Gūtmane, Anda Kuduma), the growing prominence of short forms (Ilze Jansone), and representations of women’s experience (Zita Kārkla). The chapters on poetry explore innovations in conceptualism (Ivars Šteinbergs), the new generation of poets (Artis Ostups), the presence of sociopolitical themes (Ilva Skulte), and questions of materiality and ecology (Ieva Melgalve). The monograph also addresses poetry and prose for children (Linda Mence), film adaptations of novels (Elīna Reitere), and the use of literature in theatre (Līga Ulberte). The volume concludes with a chronicle of literary life (Signe Raudive).
The publication continues the series established by the previous volumes Latvian Literature 2000–2006 and Latvian Literature 2007–2015.
The preparation and publication of the book were supported by the State Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia.
