Article in "Nature" on ILFA Senior Researcher's Work Supporting Ukrainian Scholars

On 11 September 2024, the internationally recognised journal "Nature" published an article on the difficult situation of science in Ukraine during the war. Alongside the work of other non-governmental organisations, the article highlights the achievements of #ScienceForUkraine, an organisation initiated by Sanita Reinsone, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art (ILFA) of the University of Latvia, which has been operating with an international team since the start of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

In the interview, Sanita looks back at the early days of the initiative, when in the spring of 2022 #ScienceForUkraine grew from a one-person initiative into an organisation which, at the peak of its activity, involved more than 130 people from 30 countries, collaborating with organisations such as the International Science Council, ALLEA, EBSCO, and others. The Latvian Young Scientists’ Association also played an important role in establishing #ScienceForUkraine. Its board member, Matīss Reinfelds, is part of the organisation’s management team. Many other researchers and students from several Latvian higher education and research institutions have also participated in #ScienceForUkraine’s activities.

Now formally registered as a non-governmental organisation in Latvia, #ScienceForUkraine continues to maintain a unified database of support opportunities available to Ukrainian scholars and offers an academic mobility support programme.
