Article by Benedikts Kalnačs on diversity of realism
An article by Benedikts Kalnačs "Diversity of Realism" has been published in the online magazine Punctum. The research was conducted within the framework of the Latvian Council of Science research project "Reclaiming Latvian Realism: Literary Innovation as Identity Quest" (REALT), implemented by the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia.
In the article, Benedikts Kalnačs reflects on the significance of realism in Latvian literature at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, pointing out the undeserved marginalization and narrowed perception of this movement. Although realism in theoretical discourse was often opposed to modernism and criticized for excessive conservatism or social dogmatism, its texts actually reveal trends close to early modernism, as well as a deep emotional and multisensory experience. This suggests that realism literature is not merely a simple copying of the external world, but can also be an autonomous and self-reflexive form of modeling the surrounding environment and events.
This publication continues the series of essays on the problematic of realism initiated in Punctum.
