The 44th issue of journal "Letonica" (English edition) is published
The 44th issue of the humanities journal "Letonica" (English edition) goes to readers in July and introduces the paradigm of the environmental humanities and its relation to Latvian history and today's challenges.
The issue is edited by environmental geographer Anita Zariņa (Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences, University of Latvia), philosopher Artis Svece (Faculty of History and Philosophy, University of Latvia), and environmental geographer Ivo Vinogradovs (Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences, University of Latvia). In the introduction to the issue, the relevance of environmental humanities from a global perspective is stated, and the contribution of Latvian researchers is highlighted.
In the first article, philosopher Raivis Bičevskis (Faculty of History and Philosophy, University of Latvia) analyses modernity's discourses on history, nature, society, and the world. The issue continues with a study of the formation of the Latvian coastal landscape in the context of the Soviet socio-economic and ideological regime by cultural geographer Kristīne Krumberga (Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences, University of Latvia).
Environmental researchers Kristīne Āboliņa (Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences, University of Latvia) and Andis Zīlāns (Baltic Environmental Forum Latvia) identify aspects of the quality and management of Riga's urban environment that are important for the residents of the waterfront to "feel at home". Cultural geographer Jānis Matvejs (Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences, University of Latvia) examines the representation of Riga's inner courtyards in Soviet-era movies between 1945 and 1990. This is followed by another article dedicated to Riga - an article on the semiotics of graffiti stencils by Normunds Kozlovs and Ilva Skulte, media and communication researchers at the Faculty of Communication of Riga Stradiņš University.
Environmental geographer Agnese Reķe (Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences, University of Latvia) analyses human-wolf relations in Latvia, looking at the dominant discourses about wolves in the most popular Latvian digital news media. Her research is complemented by an article by anthropologist Māra Neikena (Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Latvia) on the role of animals in news about violence in Latvian online media. The animal theme is continued by an article by Anita Zariņa, Dārta Treija, and Ivo Vinogradovs, environmental geographers at the Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences of the University of Latvia, on human-sumbr relations in the Latvian ethnoscape.
The issue concludes with a study on ontological aspects of food consumption by philosopher Anne Sauka (Faculty of History and Philosophy, University of Latvia).
