Chapter by Kitija Balcare on ecotheatre published in an international collective monograph

A book chapter by Kitija Balcare, researcher at the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia, has been published in the collective monograph Imagining, Designing and Teaching Regenerative Futures: Art‑Science Approaches and Inspirations From Around the World, issued by the international academic publisher Springer.
The chapter, titled “Ecotheatre as a Tool of Environmental Imaginary”, explores how ecotheatre — an interdisciplinary artistic practice that combines performative approaches with ecological thinking — can serve as a medium for shaping environmental imagination and deepening ecological awareness. The author examines the capacity of ecotheatre to create emotionally and physically engaging experiences that foster reflection on the human relationship with nature and the possibilities of building a sustainable future. Special attention is given to the role of performative storytelling, collective creative processes, and embodied participation, as well as to the integration of these elements into artistic and educational practices.
The volume, edited by Julia Bentz and Jelena Ristić Trajković, was published in September 2025 as part of the Science for Sustainable Societies series by Springer, and is available in open access HERE.
