International Conference on Archives in Riga

The International Council on Archives Section on University and Research Institution Archives (ICA-SUV) is holding its 2017 Conference, “Cultural Heritage Materials–University, Research and Folklore Archives in the 21st Century” in Riga, the National Library of Latvia, from August 21—25. The participants have been invited to explore the archival practices in universities and research archives and those in folklore archives where more intensive collection management, access, and use practices have been critical. The conference was organized by the ICA-SUV in collaboration with the National Archives of Latvia and the Archives of Latvian Folklore, Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia.

The conference focus is on cultural heritage materials, digital-born materials, description and use of archives, and the respectful stewardship and engagement with creator communities. SUV Chair William J. Maher writes, “Whether you are a folklore archivist or a general archivist, we guarantee that the program will move you to stop and think about ways to make your own cultural heritage work more effective. We also know that as good as these papers promise to be, the conference will only achieve its ultimate goal if you come and strengthen the sessions, whether by challenging the speakers or by adding your experiences.” Altogether, archivists, folklorists, and representatives from other branches of folklore studies from 17 countries will present at the conference. The countries include: Latvia, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Austria, France, Great Britain, Belarus, Turkey, Australia, the USA, Canada and Indonesia. The cultural program of the conference will provide the guests with professional visits to the Archives of Latvian Folklore and the National Archives of Latvia.
