300 Baltic Writers: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania: A Reference Guide to Authors and Their Works (2009)

300 Baltic Writers: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania: A Reference Guide to Authors and Their Works. Editorial board: Benedikts Kalnačs, Jūratė Sprindytė, Jaan Undusk. Vilnius: Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore, 2009.

This reference book presents a hundred of the best-known writers from each of the three Baltic States – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, starting with the time in the 16th century when the written word first appeared in their national languages, and going on to the twenty-first century (the bibliography goes up to to the year 2008). The articles on the 300 writers in this book are written by 43 authors. The material in each article is presented in the following way: a short definition of the importance of the writer, the main biographical facts, a list of the published works, a review of all the writer's work, a list of the main translations into other languages, and a list of works of criticism (mainly in foreign languages). The guide provides information on over 10,000 works of fiction, 1000 sources of literary criticism, 332 anthologies, over 500 literary magazines, and 18 literary histories. This book should be a useful source of information on the literature of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania: the classics, works from the Soviet period, the drive for innovation in the immediate post-Soviet years, and the search for a wider European audience in our times.
